Memsys commissions brine concentration system for RO concentrates from sea water desalination

Within this project, memsys realized together with partner company ABENGOA a sea water desalination system using the retentate/concentrate of an onsite R.O. desalination system.

Following tasks have been addressed:

- Further concentration of R.O. brine, combined with Ultrafiltration
- Optimized energy efficiency of overall system
- Close to ZLD disposal and increased fresh water recovery

The system shall enables an efficient use of the implemented sea water and targets on an overall recovery ration of more than 80%. This creates a concentrate that is close to saturation levels and would be a good preparation for ZLD operation of the overall system.

At the same time, energy efficiency is a major issue, and the implemented technologies target on an overall electricity demand of the system of less than 3.5 kWh/m³.

The implemented memsys MD system has been recently taken into operation and will be finally commissioned after system fine tuning in October 2016.

Valuables Recovery: Memsys commissions FeCl3 recovery plant in China

The production of zinc-coated steel parts produces considerable quantities of acidic wastewater with a high concentration of metal ions.

Membrane distillation modules by memsys are used for valuable recovery and volume reduction in Shandong Province / China since early 2016.

Task: Concentrate these highly corrosive solutions up to 40% wt. Value Proposition: Economic reuse of the valuables (e.g. FeCl3) in the liquid, reduction of transportation cost as additional benefit.

The applied system comprises four modules in parallel operation with a total membrane surface of approx. 200 m².

Concentration of sugar solutions

General Idea: In different processing steps of liquid concentrate production as well as on the way to crystallization of sugar, evaporation plays a significant role.

Traditional evaporators for beet or cane sugar processing are facing energy requirement issues as well as precipitation issues, depending on the concentration that is processed.

memsys® Membrane distillation can be applied advantageously especially for mid salinity and mid sugar concentration levels, where it is possible to concentrate the solutions with very attractive low thermal energy demand numbers and in a smooth and gentle way.

Features and benefits of memsys V-MEMD:

- Improvement of sugar production capacity
- Reduction of thermal energy demand of the overall concentration process
- Application of low temperature waste heat for pre-concentration steps
- Low degradation of long-chain sugars due to reduced temperature level
- Quality control of the concentration process at low temperatures

Memsys is sharpening its business portfolio

A new company structure and a reasonably straightened task list are the present focus in re-aligning the business activities of Memsys.

One of the core elements therein is the sharp focusing on technically advantageous and high value creating applications where memsys VMEMD creates upmost value by its exclusive and unique process properties. Those are:

- Highly purified water in pharmaceutical applications and power plant sector
-- water for injection
-- ultra pure water for medical technology production
-- boiler feed water and water for steam creation from boiler blow down

- HHighly saline / acidic corrosive process waters
-- salt recovery from mixed solutions and acids
-- volume reduction of concentrates upfront disposal and filling
-- closed process loops in saline water processes

- Sugar solution concentration in sugar factories and production of glucose syrups
-- energy efficiency improvement utilizing low temperature heat
-- quality improvement of concentrated sugar solutions
